What a DVIR must cover under 49 CFR 396.11

Each template includes the elements the federal rule asks for:

When is a written report required? Since the 2014 rule (79 FR 75449), drivers of property-carrying vehicles only have to prepare a DVIR when a defect is found or reported. Since 17 September 2020 (85 FR 50793) the same applies to passenger-carrying vehicles. Many carriers still fill one in every day as good practice. The rule does not apply to private motor carriers of passengers (nonbusiness), driveaway-towaway operations, or carriers operating only one commercial motor vehicle (396.11(a)(5)). Electronic DVIRs are allowed under 396.11(a)(6) and 390.32.

Intermodal equipment: drivers who find damage or defects on intermodal equipment (chassis) must report them to the intermodal equipment provider, including the provider's and carrier's USDOT numbers, the unique equipment ID, and the date and time of the report (396.11(b)). Our intermodal template covers these fields and the provider's repair certification.

Primary sources (eCFR): 49 CFR 396.11 · 49 CFR 396.13 · 49 CFR 392.7. Read how the rules have changed in US DVIR regulation changes since 2010.
